After 90 min: Bartender-quality cocktails: Margarita, Daiquiri, Old Fashioned, Negroni, Manhattan

The five cocktails in this plan cover the complete range of bartending technique: shaking (Margarita, Daiquiri), stirring (Old Fashioned, Negroni, Manhattan), and the fundamental balance of sour, sweet, and spirit that underlies most classic drinks. Master these five and you understand enough structure to build most other cocktails, because the classic families all derive from the same underlying formulas — a Daiquiri and a Margarita are structurally identical, with different base spirits.

The session moves through each cocktail in order of technique complexity, starting with the Margarita because it demonstrates fresh citrus, proper salting, and shaking all at once. The Old Fashioned teaches the opposite approach — stirring builds a different dilution and texture than shaking, and the choice is not interchangeable. The Negroni and Manhattan then demonstrate the bitter-vermouth-spirit balance that defines a whole family of drinks with equal parts logic.

Fresh citrus is where the plan draws its hardest line. Pre-made sour mix cannot be disguised by spirit quality — the preservatives and artificial flavoring are immediately identifiable. The difference between a cocktail made with lime squeezed that day and one made with bottled juice is tasteable in the first sip. After this session, that distinction — and the dozen small techniques that separate a good cocktail from a great one — become instincts rather than rules to remember.

The 90-Minute Plan

Master the Margarita0–15 min

Combine 2 oz tequila, 1 oz fresh lime juice, ½ oz triple sec in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake for 10-15 seconds until icy cold. Strain into a salt-rimmed glass over ice.

The Daiquiri15–35 min

Combine 2 oz rum, ¾ oz fresh lime juice, ½ oz simple syrup in shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a coupe glass. This simple drink is perfect when made with quality ingredients.

Old Fashioned (Stirred)35–55 min

Place a sugar cube in a glass. Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters and a splash of water. Muddle gently. Add 2 oz bourbon and a large ice cube. Stir until chilled. Orange twist garnish.

Negroni & Manhattan55–75 min

Negroni: equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth, stirred with ice. Manhattan: 2 oz bourbon, ½ oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, stirred with ice.

Taste & Perfect75–90 min

Taste each cocktail and understand the balance: sweet, sour, spirit, and strength. A good cocktail should be refreshing and properly chilled. Presentation matters—clear ice, proper glassware, appropriate garnish.

Pro Tip

Fresh citrus is non-negotiable. Pre-made sour mix and old juice will ruin a cocktail. Also, use proper ice—shake shakers with ice for 10-15 seconds to get everything properly cold.
